Article Summary

Overview

We can accept and process samples from museums, herbarium collections, material that has been in prolonged storage, and valuable material.

However, DNA quality declines as time in storage increases. It also depends on how material has been stored.

Recommendation
It is our preference and recommendation that DNA from old or very valuable samples is extracted by you. As a high-throughput lab, our standard procedures may not be suitable for such samples.

If, however, you do choose to use our DNA extraction services we will do our best, and will likely request additional sample material on which to perform test extractions.

Notifying us of sensitive or valuable samples

It is critical that you alert us if your material is old, especially valuable or has been in prolonged storage, by placing prominent notes in your order, on the samples, and in the ‘Comments’ section of the Sample Tracking File. With this knowledge, we may vary our extraction method, but please remember that successfully extracting DNA from this type of sample is not guaranteed.

If you’re unsure about the required size or nature of these samples, please contact us.
